Nose piercing-does it matter what side of your nose you pierce?

I’ve decided to get my nose pierced and was wondering if it is just your own preference of what side of your nose you pierce or is it traditionally a certain side? This may be a dumb question, but I know there’s certain “rules” regarding men and piercing a certain earlobe.

What is the pain for a lip piercing compared to a ear pierce not professional done?
